| The Semester Prediction |
So today I have finally attended each of my classes for the semester for at least the first time. This semester I am taking: COMM-397 - Communication Research ECON-213 - Survey of Economics JOUR-488 - Mass Communication & Society PREL 485 - Public Relations Techniques ART-344 - Ancient Art History
Here's a bit of an overview of what I expect from this semester.
For Comm. Research, I've heard from a number of people that the class is a ton of work. After attending that class yesterday, I know that I've been well warned, yet for some reason I think I will still enjoy it. Dr. Crumley seems incredibly sweet and I already feel that I will be able to go to her with any questions I will have. She seems to be one of those teachers who is truly focused on helping students succeed as long as they want to.
Survey of Economics is obviously the lowest level class I'm taking, yet even after the first class there is really nothing that I've heard about it that interests me. The one upside is that I've already taken a Erickson class and know his style of teaching and that he curves quite nicely.
As for Mass Comm. and Society... well, not only is this a class that's just about as high as you can get at the undergrad level, but its also a writing course. For this class, I will have to write a 10-15 page paper and also speak on one side of a debate (pray for me Feb. 9). There is some good news from today's class. Originally we were going to have to debate twice, but because we have more students in the class than anticipated, he knocked it down to one. While there are also abstracts to write for this class as well as 2 essay exams, those I'm not as worried about.
Next comes PR Techniques; While there are some rather obnoxious assignments in this class, its a Lynn class. While I did feel I could have learned a bit more in the two other classes I've taken from here, I do appreciate that it should be one of my easier classes. While this class also includes a 10-12 page paper, I already have an idea what I'm going to do it on (thanks to Lynn's suggestion in class based on a discussion we had the other day) and I think if I work it right I may be able to write one paper for both PR and Mass Comm. & Society. We'll see as the semester progresses.
Finally is my Ancient Art History class. Ohh, the drama. This is the class I'm taking instead of the one that was canceled last minute. I actually just got home from this class and am not quite as worried as I was when I went in. While it is also a "writing" course, instead of one long paper, the teacher is assigning a few of shorter papers that are not necessarily research, but more a reaction to the art and time period we are studying in class. Sure I'm still not excited about the class, but I'm also no longer feeling overwhelmed. Who knows, maybe I'll even find something interesting somewhere along the line.
So anyway, now that I've given an overview of what I anticipate this semester, I really should finish my study-guide for Comm. Research so that I don't have to get up early tomorrow morning to work on it. |

I'm finally a college graduate who's now going in a direction different than my degree. Its stressful at times, but completely worth it.
